Helmet (Legal Requirement)

⚠️ Wearing a helmet is a legal requirement when riding a motorcycle in the UK. You cannot use a non-approved helmet!


UK-approved helmet standards:
• UNECE 22.05 — still legal and valid
• UNECE 22.06 — the latest standard
• BS 6658:1985 + BSI Kitemark

🔹 Full-face helmets are recommended. NEVER buy a used helmet — drop damage is invisible from outside.

Helmet Safety Stars (SHARP)

🔹 ECE approval is a pass mark, not a quality score. Two helmets carrying the same 22.06 approval can differ measurably in safety. SHARP exists to show exactly that difference.


What is SHARP?
The Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme — an independent helmet testing scheme launched by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) in 2007. It buys helmets off the shelf, runs impact tests more severe than the regulations require, and awards 1 to 5 stars.

Why it matters
• Motorcyclists are about 1% of UK traffic but 19% of casualties
• Around 80% of motorcyclist fatalities and 70% of serious injuries involve head injuries
• Impacts are distributed fairly evenly around the helmet, so a strong front alone is not enough

⚠️ Fit first, stars second. The Europe-wide COST 327 study found 12% of helmets came off during the impact. As SHARP puts it: even a five-star helmet will not protect you if it is not on your head at the point of impact.


The right order
1. Measure your head — around the circumference, just above the ears and across the forehead
2. Try on as many helmets in your price range as you can
3. Shortlist the ones that fit correctly and are comfortable
4. From that shortlist only, pick the one with the highest SHARP rating

💷 Stars are not about price: you can search the SHARP database by manufacturer, model and type (full face / flip-up) and filter by minimum star rating. Over 50 helmets meeting the new 22.06 standard have now been tested.
